We send you an invoice. Pay 10% by EFT (use the invoice number as reference) or in cash to secure your birds.

  3. We confirm your date

Once the deposit is in, we reserve your hens and confirm the collection or delivery date with you.

  4. Collect or we deliver

Pay the balance on the day. Collect at Plot 6 Turfvlei, or we deliver for a fee quoted up front.

Prices

Prices by age

Prices are per hen, in Rand. Hens are sold by age in weeks — the older the hen, the closer she is to laying, so the price rises with age.

    Care tips

    Looking after your new hens

Hens are easy keepers once they settle in. A few practical basics for the first weeks:

    Housing

About 3–4 hens per square metre indoors, plus a shaded run. Give them a dry, draught-free house with a perch and a nest box for every 3–4 hens.

    Feed

Use a proper layers pellet or mash from about 18 weeks. One hen eats roughly 110–130 g a day. Feed in a hanging feeder so it stays clean.

    Water

Clean water, always available. Hens drink about half a litre a day — more in hot Potchefstroom summers. Wash the drinker every few days.

    Vaccination

All our birds are vaccinated on the farm before they leave us. Keep them away from unvaccinated birds for the first few weeks.

    When to expect eggs

From around 18–20 weeks. It is normal for the first few eggs to be small or soft-shelled. Give them a couple of weeks to settle into a rhythm.

    Settling in

Keep new hens in their house for the first day or two, then let them out. Handle them gently at first — calm breeds settle within a week.

    FAQ

    Questions we get asked

    How does the deposit work?

A 10% deposit on the quoted total secures your hens in a batch. We invoice you, you pay by EFT using the invoice number as reference (or in cash), and we confirm your booking once it reflects. The deposit comes off your final amount — the balance is paid on collection or delivery.

Where do you deliver, and what does it cost?

We deliver around Potchefstroom and across the North West, including Klerksdorp, and quote a delivery fee based on distance before you book. Collection at Plot 6, Turfvlei is free.

    Is there a minimum order?

No minimum for collection at the farm — you're welcome to take a few hens. For delivery we usually ask for a small minimum number to make the trip worthwhile; ask us and we'll work something out.

    Are the hens vaccinated?

Yes. All birds are vaccinated on our farm on the standard programme before they leave. Bring the birds home to a clean house and keep them separate from unvaccinated poultry for the first few weeks.

    When can I collect?

Collection times are arranged with you when we confirm your booking — usually weekday afternoons or Saturday mornings. Please come at your confirmed time so we can have your hens ready and boxed.

What should I bring on collection day?

Strong cardboard boxes or crates with ventilation holes (one per 5–6 hens is comfortable), and something to cover them on the drive home. Bring the balance in cash or pay by EFT before you leave. We can supply boxes on request.

Can I get younger hens instead of point of lay?

Yes — we sell by age in weeks, from young birds through to point of lay. Look at the price list, then tell us the age you want and we'll check what's growing on.

    How do I pay?

EFT with the invoice number as your reference, or cash on collection. We send the invoice by WhatsApp or email after you confirm what you want.

    About us

A small farm doing one thing properly

Potch Laying Hens started the way most good farm ideas do: a few chickens in the yard that turned into a proper batch. Today we raise day-old chicks at Plot 6, Turfvlei, just outside Potchefstroom, and grow them on until they're strong young laying hens.

We keep our batches small enough that every bird gets looked at properly — clean houses, good feed, fresh water and a vaccination programme that's done on time. When you buy from us, you're getting a hen that's had a good start, not a bird that was pushed through.

Most of our customers are people like us: a family with a backyard run, a smallholder adding a few hundred hens, or a farm shop wanting a reliable supplier. We're happy to talk you through breeds and ages before you commit.
